Orville Small This is how Orville describes how this weird addiction got a hold of him.....
How did this happen you ask?.....No clue! What last I remember before having a guy named 'congo' and his buddies 'cowbell' and 'bongos' slip some magic potion into my drink at the bar is not very clear. I guess I do remember a time about two years back where I was taken to a Latin club by some ladyfriends and couldn't wait for the hip hop set to be played. But then that potion had kicked in. In a matter of weeks my homeboy Chester and I set out to take a 13 week lesson. Seeing that I progressed faster than expected, I cut my session short and took a few private lessons. Shortly after, about six months, I was approached to audition for a Cuban group recognized for performing across Quebec.
From that point, I had one goal in mind..........Do my own thing!! So between going to the clubs, practicing on my own and taking a private from time to time, I set out to establish what I wanted to see myself being as a dancer. At about a year, I opened my dance school and taught at a club called 6/49 with Chester Moran. So if you're ever in Montreal, holler at him cause he'll 'hook you up'. Throughout that time until this present day I have been competing in local and major competitions placing first in seven of ten. Sooooooooooo now I am where I am today. I've moved to Toronto on very short notice to fulfill my love for this dance or better yet, to find out what old 'congo' slipped into my drink.
Now, I can try and search for a whole lot of dance background to feed you but there is none. Did I back spin on cardboard in the past? Sure.........but that's the extent of it. Don't let a lack of academics prior to dancing salsa fool you. My heart guides and my body follows................burn rubber on the pavement.

Salsa Addiction Salsa Addiction: Juliet McMains.
Passionate, classy, and playful, Juliets unique salsa style captivates both men and women on the dance floor. Her eclectic dance background-including salsa, ballroom, swing, ballet, jazz, modern, yoga, dance history, and movement analysis-informs both her dancing and teaching. Juliets approach to salsa is revolutionary because she takes into consideration both similarities and differences between nightclub Latin dances and ballroom Latin dances.
These two forms of "Latin" dance are often represented in opposition to each other-the structured, technical form for competition ballroom dancing vs. the spontaneous and free form for social interactions in clubs. Juliet has developed a structure for teaching and learning the technique for playful salsa dancing that does not destroy its improvisational character.
Some of the competition titles she has accrued include U.S.: National Rising Star Professional Rhythm Finalist and Conga Room Salsa Finalist. As an exhibition ballroom and Latin dancer, Juliet has performed extensively throughout the U.S. Juliet is also a PhD candidate in dance history and theory at the University of California, Riverside. |
Salsa Crazy Evan Margolin, founder of SalsaCrazy.com, and a San Francisco native, went through a part of his life afraid to dance! Feeling completely uncordinated, and moderately shy, dancing was quickly overlooked in favor of career development. Salsa Lovers The 'Salsa Lovers' dance studio from Miami considers Casino/Rueda the most exhilerating form of Salsa dancing. Casino started in the 1950's in a Havana social club called 'El Casino Deportivo', and was brought to Miami by the first wave of cuban exiles. Since then Casino has grown, not just in size, but also in complexity and style. As the times progressed some additional influences (such as 'disco') have affected the dance, however today's Rueda's are quite similar to those of 50 years ago. Dancing Salsa is a way of 'connecting' with somebody, both physically and mentally. When you dance with a partner you both have to be in sync with each other, and this creates a bond. In Rueda, it extends to the entire group.
'Salsa Lovers' is the biggest Rueda Studio in the world.
Over 35.000 students all around South Florida have experienced this dance craze, now it is your turn! |
SalsaIsGood SalsaIsGood is lead by Fabio Boschetti.
Fabio has danced salsa since late 98. Because he lives in Perth in the extremely isolated Western Australia, he made several trips just to learn more about dance. These include Costa Rica, Curacao, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, LA and NY. He took many other classes worldwide during his business trips.
He taught salsa for 3 years, running what at the time was the most successful course in town. In 2002 he 'retired' from teaching, partly because of his frequent work related trips, partly to concentrate on his video and music production.
A highlight in his career as a dancer was to be invited as an instructor at the 2002 East Coast World salsa congress in New York.
He brings into his activities three different types of expertise, as a semi professional dancer and musician and as a professional mathematician.
The relation between music and dance is obvious: dancing would not exist without music. But in salsa this is even stronger, since here the opposite is probably also true. He believes believe that a salsa dancer with a superficial understanding of the music is incomplete, as is a salsa musician who has never danced.
Maths enters into this since it allows him to see structure and patterns both in the dance and in the music. Seeing 'structure' in dance means analyzing dance patters, breaking them down, understanding which can be combined and which can not. He says it helps him to memorize figures and enabes him to pick up a figure by just watching someone else perform it once. Ultimately, it makes it possible for him to develop a salsa figure in his head before even dancing it, it is crucial to improvisation. |
Santo Rico The history of Santo Rico Dates back to 1995. The name of the dance company is derived from the initial members of the group being half from Santo Domingo (Santo) and half from Puerto Rico (Rico), hence the name 'Santo Rico'. Santo Rico was formed by Willy Beltre, a 32 year old Dominican native.
Santo Rico, now under the direction of Thomas Guerrero, is one of New York's premier dance companies. They have performed alongside well-renowned artists like Tito Puente, Marc Anthony, Jose Alberto and Johnny Pacheco, also performing and teaching their style of Salsa/Mambo at Congresses throughout the US, Canada and Europe. |
SuperMario SuperMario has, in a very short time, created a name for himself in Salsa, not only through his students in his home country UK and the rest of Europe, but as far as America and Australia, where many succesful teachers and performers also admire his dancing ability and imagination.
Mario Hazarika, 28, was born in India, an accountant by profession, and has been dancing Salsa since 1997. Mario's style is fast and smooth, which allows both men and ladies freedom to improvise. He prides himself that none of his moves are choreographed, and all his moves can be used with any lady, even if she has never danced with him, or his students before.
He has released on video some of the moves he is renowned for, also focussing on showing technicalities and information on leading 'Cross Body Style' Salsa. |
Susana Montero Established as one of the premier teacher/dancer/choreographers of the UK, Susana Montero has been dancing since the age of five, including Ballet for fifteen years, Jazz, Contemporary, end Afro Cuban, and since 1997 Salsa, enjoying and excelling in all of them. |
